Castleton is a town in Rutland County, in the state of Vermont, United States.
Overview
Located in southwestern Vermont near the New York border, Castleton lies within the Green Mountains region and includes part of Lake Bomoseen, the state’s largest natural lake. According to the 2020 United States Census, the town’s population was 4,458 residents. The town covers an area of approximately 45 square miles (116 km²), of which about 3 square miles (8 km²) are water. Castleton is home to Castleton University, a constituent college of the Vermont State Colleges system, and hosts a mix of residential, educational, and light‑manufacturing activities, notably granite quarrying. The town’s historic district contains a concentration of 19th‑century architecture, and the surrounding landscape supports outdoor recreation such as boating, fishing, and hiking.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Castleton” was assigned when the town was chartered in 1761 by Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire, who named many New Hampshire Grants after English towns. The name is believed to be derived from Castleton, Derbyshire, England.
