Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi

Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi (transl. Savings Bank of Jesi) was an Italian savings bank based in Jesi, in the province of Ancona, Marche region. Founded in 1844, it operated as an independent credit institution for over a century and a half, serving the local economy of the Vallesina area.

History The bank was established on 26 September 1844 by papal decree of Pope Gregory XVI, initially operating as a mount of piety (Monte di Pietà) and savings bank. It functioned as a public-law entity until the banking reforms of the 1990s (Legge Amato), which required the separation of banking activities from philanthropic functions.

In 1992, the bank was restructured into a joint-stock company (Società per Azioni), with the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi established as the shareholder foundation holding the bank's equity, dedicated to pursuing social utility and economic development in the territory.

Mergers and Acquisition During the consolidation of the Italian banking sector in the 1990s and 2000s, Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi lost its independence through a series of aggregations:

  • 1994: It merged with Cassa di Risparmio di Fano, Cassa di Risparmio di Pesaro, and Cassa di Risparmio di Fermo to form Banca delle Marche (headquartered in Ancona).
  • 2015: Following financial difficulties and a bail-in procedure under the European Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive, Banca delle Marche was placed in resolution. The "good bank" assets were transferred to a new entity (Nuova Banca delle Marche), which was subsequently sold to UBI Banca.
  • 2017: UBI Banca absorbed Nuova Banca delle Marche, retiring the brand.
  • 2021: UBI Banca was merged into Intesa Sanpaolo, which currently operates the former branches in the Jesi area.

Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi The banking foundation (Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi) continues to operate as a non-profit philanthropic organization. It manages the assets derived from the sale of its stake in the successor banking groups and distributes grants for projects in the fields of scientific research, education, art and culture, health, and social welfare, primarily within the province of Ancona.

Historical Headquarters The bank's historical headquarters is located in Palazzo della Cassa di Risparmio, situated in Piazza della Repubblica in the historic center of Jesi. The building remains a landmark of the city.
