Carrick-on-Suir

Carrick-on-Suir (Irish: Carraig na Siúire, meaning "Rock of the Suir") is a town in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is situated on the River Suir, approximately 17 km (11 mi) east of Clonmel and 27 km (17 mi) west of Waterford city. The town lies on the border between County Tipperary and County Waterford, with the river forming the county boundary at this point.

History The town originated as a settlement around a castle built in the 13th century by the Butler family, who became the Earls of Ormond. The Butlers were a dominant Anglo-Norman dynasty in the region. The town developed as a market center and a strategic river crossing. In the 16th century, Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond, built a significant Elizabethan manor house (Ormond Castle) adjoining the earlier medieval fortifications, which remains a key heritage site.

During the 17th century, the town was involved in the Confederate Wars and the Williamite War. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Carrick-on-Suir became a center for the woolen and textile industries, and later for brewing and tanning. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century (the Waterford and Limerick line) facilitated trade, though the line to Limerick was later closed (the Waterford connection remains operational for freight and limited passenger services).
