Definition
Carlos Ghosn is a French‑Lebanese‑Brazilian businessman known for his leadership of major automotive manufacturers, most notably as chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Nissan Motor Co., Renault S.A., and the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance.
Overview
Born on 9 March 1954 in Porto Velho, Brazil, Ghosn grew up in Lebanon and France, acquiring French citizenship and later Brazilian citizenship. He graduated from the École Polytechnique and École des Mines de Paris with degrees in engineering and economics. Ghosn began his career at Michelin in 1978, where he held various senior positions in North America, Europe, and Japan.
In 1996, he joined Renault as Executive Vice President, overseeing the company's worldwide operations. In 1999, he was appointed Chairman and CEO of Nissan, playing a central role in rescuing the financially troubled automaker through a turnaround plan that emphasized cost reduction, product revitalization, and cross‑company collaboration. In 2005, he became Chairman of the Renault–Nissan Alliance, later expanded to include Mitsubishi Motors in 2016, forming one of the world’s largest automotive groups.
Ghosn’s tenure was marked by rapid growth in sales and profitability for the alliance. However, in November 2018, he was arrested in Japan on allegations of financial misconduct, including under‑reporting his compensation and misusing company assets. He spent approximately 100 days in Japanese detention before being released on bail. In December 2019, Ghosn fled Japan and arrived in Lebanon, a country that does not have an extradition treaty with Japan. Since then, he has lived in Lebanon and continued to comment on the automotive industry and corporate governance.
