Carlisle Tithe Barn

The Carlisle Tithe Barn is a historic 15th‑century tithe barn situated in the city of Carlisle, Cumbria, England (grid reference NY 400 558). It is a Grade I listed building, a designation it received on 1 June 1949, recognizing its national architectural and historic importance.

Construction and original function
The barn was erected in the 1470s for Thomas Gondibour, the prior of the Augustinian Priory of St Mary (1465–1507). As part of the priory complex, it served as a storage facility for tithes—agricultural produce owed to the church—collected from the surrounding parishioners.

Architectural features
The structure is built of sandstone, with the south elevation (facing Heads Lane) forming a wall approximately 3 feet 7 inches (1.09 m) thick. The north side is believed to have originally been open. Internally, the barn retains a series of oak roof trusses supported by substantial timber posts, typical of medieval tithe barns.

Later history
Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the priory church was re‑established as Carlisle Cathedral, and the barn was repurposed for various secular uses, including a stable and a dispensary. Modifications in 1824 adapted the building for dispensary functions. In 1875, sections of the western end that were in danger of collapse were dismantled.

By the late 20th century the barn had fallen into semi‑dereliction. It was purchased and restored by St Cuthbert’s Church between 1969 and 1971. Since the restoration, the building has functioned as the church hall and a venue for a wide range of community events, such as meetings, concerts, and private functions.

Significance
The Carlisle Tithe Barn is one of the few surviving medieval tithe barns in northern England and exemplifies the agricultural and ecclesiastical economy of the late medieval period. Its Grade I listing underscores its architectural integrity and historical value within the regional built heritage of Cumbria.
