Definition
Carles Puigdemont is a Catalan politician, journalist, and former president of the Generalitat de Catalunya (the government of Catalonia, Spain).
Overview
Born on 29 December 1962 in Amer, Catalonia, Puigdemont began his career as a journalist before entering politics with the center‑right Convergence and Union (CiU) coalition. He served as mayor of Girona from 2011 to 2016 and was elected president of the Generalitat de Catalunya on 12 January 2016. His tenure became internationally prominent following the 2017 Catalan independence referendum, which the Spanish Constitutional Court declared illegal. After the Catalan Parliament declared independence on 27 October 2017, the Spanish government invoked Article 155 of the Constitution, dissolved the regional government, and imposed direct rule. Puigdemont fled to Belgium to avoid prosecution, and in March 2018 the European Parliament granted him a seat as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), a position he continues to hold while in exile. He faces ongoing legal proceedings in Spain for charges including rebellion, sedition, and misuse of public funds, which he denies, asserting they are politically motivated.
Etymology/Origin
- Carles is the Catalan form of the given name Charles, derived from the Germanic name Karl, meaning “free man”.
- Puigdemont is a Catalan surname composed of puig (“hill” or “mount”) and demont, a contraction of de Mont (“of the mountain”). The name therefore conveys a geographic origin, likely indicating ancestry from a hilly or mountainous area.
Characteristics
- Political affiliation: Initially a member of Convergence and Union (CiU); later co‑founder of the pro‑independence party Junts per Catalunya (Together for Catalonia).
- Policy focus: Advocacy for Catalan self‑determination, promotion of the Catalan language and culture, and decentralization of powers from the Spanish central government.
- Leadership style: Known for a charismatic public presence, frequent use of social media, and a confrontational stance toward Spanish authorities during the 2017 crisis.
- Legal status: Subject to an arrest warrant issued by the Spanish judiciary; resides in exile in Belgium. European Court of Justice rulings have upheld his parliamentary immunity as an MEP, preventing extradition to Spain.
- Professional background: Prior to politics, worked as a journalist for Diari de Girona and as a television presenter, which contributed to his public visibility.
