Carabus obsoletus carpathicus

Carabus obsoletus carpathicus is a subspecies of ground beetle in the family Carabidae, described by the Austrian entomologist Anton Alois Palliardi in 1825. It is a narrow-range endemic to the Carpathian Mountains, primarily found in Romania, with additional records from Czech Republic, Moldova, and Ukraine.

Taxonomy and Classification

This subspecies belongs to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, order Coleoptera, family Carabidae, subfamily Carabinae, tribe Carabini, genus Carabus, subgenus Eucarabus, and species Carabus obsoletus. The parent species Carabus obsoletus was originally described by Jacob Heinrich Sturm in 1815, with the type specimen from Moravia Silesia (present-day Czech Republic). The subspecific epithet carpathicus derives from the Carpathian Mountains, reflecting the taxon's endemic distribution.

Description

Adults typically measure 24–25 mm in length and 9–10 mm in width, presenting a robust, elongated body form. The beetle is black-colored with fine, obsolete punctures on the elytra and a distinctive microsculpture. The elytra feature subequal salient intervals with an entire interval following the third primary ridge. The pronotum is transverse with rounded lateral sides and short lateral margins. The legs are long and robust, adapted for rapid terrestrial locomotion, and the mandibles are strong and curved for capturing prey.

Populations exhibit notable geographic variation correlated with elevation. Individuals from lowland areas (250–300 m) tend to be larger (24–25 mm), while those from semi-mountainous zones (1,300–1,400 m) are smaller (21–22 mm).

Distribution and Habitat

Carabus obsoletus carpathicus is endemic to the Carpathian Mountains, primarily in Romania, with specific records from the Banat Mountains, Semenic Mountains, and other localities in the southern and western Carpathians. Its altitudinal range spans approximately 250–1,400 m.

The subspecies primarily inhabits mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, with a strong preference for beech-dominated (Fagus sylvatica) woodlands. Studies have shown a positive correlation between its abundance and beech cover (r = 0.52, p < 0.001). It favors shaded, humid microhabitats with moist leaf litter, decaying wood, and proximity to streams.

Ecology and Behavior

As a predominantly carnivorous predator, it feeds on snails, slugs, earthworms, and insect larvae. It is nocturnal, foraging primarily at night using chemoreception via its antennae to detect prey. It employs powerful mandibles to seize and crush prey, sometimes using extraoral digestion.

The subspecies exhibits a univoltine life cycle (one generation per year), with adults active primarily from May to June. Females lay eggs singly in shallow soil burrows. The larvae are campodeiform (elongated, flattened body with well-developed legs) and undergo three instars over approximately one year. Adults can live up to three years.

Genetics

Mitochondrial DNA analyses (using COI and cyt b genes) have confirmed that C. o. carpathicus is genetically distinct from related subspecies, showing divergences of 3.0–5.6% from other C. obsoletus subspecies. Intraspecific genetic variability within the carpathicus group is approximately 1.02%. A 2018 study identified 11 distinct genetic groups within C. obsoletus in Romania, underscoring the species' high diversification.

Conservation

The subspecies has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of available data. It faces potential threats from logging activities leading to forest fragmentation, agricultural expansion, and climate change altering forest microclimates. It is considered locally common in intact Carpathian forests but potentially rarer in fragmented peripheral areas.
