Carúpano is a Venezuelan rum produced by Destilería Carúpano (Carupano Distillery). It is named after the city of Carúpano in the state of Sucre, Venezuela.
History
The distillery's historic tradition dates back to 1762, when the Hacienda Altamira-Carúpano in Macarapana was established by the Spanish captain Felix del Fierro. In 1954, the Morrison family purchased the bicentenary Hacienda Altamira, which had been abandoned since 1901 after the death of Thomas Massiani, one of its previous owners. The new owners sought to re-establish the estate's sugarcane milling capacity and its distillation and aging of rums. To this end, they joined forces with Alejandro Hernandez, owner of Industrias Pampero, and sharing equal ownership, created Destilería Carúpano, C.A., a partnership that lasted until 1962.
Production and Aging
Carúpano is known for its aged rums, produced using traditional methods. The brand's portfolio includes several expressions:
- Ron Añejo Carúpano Legendario – reportedly the only single-barrel 25-year-old Venezuelan rum; some barrels may reach up to 80 years of aging.

The rums are aged in oak barrels, and the tropical climate of Venezuela accelerates the aging process, contributing to the depth and complexity of the spirits. The brand is noted for being additive-free.
Recognition
Ron Carúpano has received multiple awards and gold medals at international spirits competitions. The 21-year-old Reserva Privada expression, in particular, has been recognized for its flavor profile featuring notes of macerated red fruits, coconut, and dark chocolate. The brand's master blender, Carmen López de Bastidas, is recognized as Venezuela's first certified female Master Blender, with over 33 years of experience.
