Capricornus (Latin for "horned goat" or "goat horn") is one of the 88 modern constellations, and one of the 12 constellations of the zodiac. Its symbol is ♑.
Etymology and History
The name "Capricornus" is Latin, derived from caper ("goat") and cornu ("horn"). The constellation is ancient, with roots in Babylonian and Sumerian astronomy, where it was associated with the god Enki (Ea), depicted as a goat-fish or "goat-horned". The Greeks adopted this imagery, associating it with Pan, the satyr god of the wild, who transformed his lower body into a fish tail when fleeing the monster Typhon.Astronomy
Capricornus is a relatively faint constellation located in the Southern Celestial Hemisphere. It is bordered by Aquila, Sagittarius, Microscopium, Piscis Austrinus, and Aquarius.- Brightest Stars: Its brightest star is Delta Capricorni (Deneb Algedi), a white giant. Other notable stars include Alpha2 Capricorni (Algedi, a multiple star system) and Beta Capricorni (Dabih).
- Deep-Sky Objects: Due to its location away from the Milky Way's dense star fields, Capricornus contains fewer prominent deep-sky objects than some other constellations. However, it is home to several galaxies, although most are faint. Messier 30 (M30) is a globular cluster located near the constellation's eastern border.
- Visibility: Capricornus is best observed in the Northern Hemisphere during late summer and early autumn, and in the Southern Hemisphere during winter.
Astrology
In Western astrology, Capricornus is the tenth astrological sign of the zodiac. It spans the 270–300th degree of the zodiac, corresponding to the tropical longitude of the Sun. Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits this sign between approximately December 22 and January 19.- Symbolism: Capricorn is often symbolized by the sea-goat, a mythical creature with the body of a goat and the tail of a fish. This dual nature is said to represent the sign's earthly, ambitious, and practical qualities (goat) combined with its connection to the subconscious, emotions, and adaptability (fish).
- Ruling Planet: Saturn is the traditional ruling planet of Capricorn. Saturn is associated with discipline, responsibility, ambition, and structure.
- Element and Modality: Capricorn is an Earth sign, denoting practicality, groundedness, and material focus. It is also a cardinal sign, indicating leadership, initiative, and the beginning of a season (winter in the Northern Hemisphere).
