Caplin Cove is a small coastal community in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is situated on the eastern shore of Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula, approximately 30 kilometres west of the provincial capital, St. John’s. The community lies at roughly 47°25′N latitude and 52°46′W longitude and falls within Subdivision A of Division 1 for census purposes.
History
Caplin Cove was established in the early 19th century as a seasonal fishing settlement. Its name derives from the capelin (also spelled “caplin”), a small migratory fish that is abundant in the waters of Conception Bay. Over time, the settlement became a year‑round community, with fishing – primarily cod and later inshore species – serving as the principal economic activity.
Demographics
According to Statistics Canada, Caplin Cove was recorded as a designated place in the 2016 census, with a population of 96 residents occupying 39 private dwellings. The community’s population has shown modest fluctuation in recent decades, reflecting broader demographic trends in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.
Economy and Infrastructure
Historically dependent on the fishery, the local economy has diversified to include small‑scale agriculture, tourism (particularly heritage and coastal tourism), and commuting to employment centres in nearby towns such as Conception Bay South and St. John’s. The community is served by a local post office, a community centre, and a small church. Educational services are provided by schools in neighbouring communities, as Caplin Cove does not operate its own school.
