Canyon News (Texas)

Canyon News is a twice-weekly newspaper serving Canyon, Texas, and the surrounding Randall County area. It is owned by Hearst Newspapers and is a publication of Panhandle Weeklies, LLC.

History

The newspaper traces its roots to 1896, when it was founded as The Stayer. It was later renamed The Randall County News before becoming The Canyon News in the early 1900s. According to the Texas Historical Commission, the first city newspaper in Canyon was the Echo, printed in 1889. Clyde W. Warwick served as editor for 45 years, from 1910 to 1955. The paper won awards for outstanding weekly in 1942 and 1950, and its 1949 Special Edition was rated the nation's best. Troy Martin became editor in 1960. A Texas historical marker was placed at the Canyon News Building (414 15th Street, Canyon) in 1968.

Operations

The newspaper is headquartered at 1500 5th Avenue in Canyon, Texas. As of 2023, its circulation was 652. The managing editor is Tim Ritter, and the publisher is Robert C. Granfeldt. The general manager is Jeff Bergin.

Historically published on Thursdays and Sundays, the Canyon News changed its publication schedule in January 2025 to Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Wednesday edition consists of 12 pages of local news and sports, while the Saturday "Weekender" edition consists of 16 pages, including a faith column and a community profile feature.

Coverage

The Canyon News covers local news, sports, education, business, crime, community events, farm and ranch topics, and entertainment. Its coverage area includes Canyon Independent School District, Happy ISD, and West Texas A&M University, as well as local government entities in Canyon and Randall County.

Awards

The Canyon News is regularly recognized by the Panhandle Press Association (PPA) and the Texas Press Association. In 2025, it won the PPA Division II General Excellence Award, defeating the Hereford Brand and the Plainview Herald. It earned 155 total points in the PPA Better Newspaper Contest that year, with first-place awards in categories including Best Human Interest Photo, Best News Photography, Best News Writing, Best Special Section (Discover Canyon magazine), Best Sports Photography, Best Front Page Layout, Best Headline Writing, and Best Sports Writing.

The Canyon News is owned by Hearst Newspapers, one of the largest newspaper publishers in the United States. It is part of the Panhandle Weeklies division of the Hearst Corporation.
