The Canton of Tavaux is an administrative division of the Jura department in the Bourgogne‑Franche‑Comté region of France. It was created during the nationwide canton reorganisation that took effect in March 2015. The canton's administrative seat is located in the commune of Tavaux.
Composition
Following the 2015 reform, the canton comprises 32 communes, including Tavaux, Bousselange, Chemenot, Châtillon, Dammartin-Marpain, Dole (partly), Faverois, Gendrey, Lons-le-Saunier (partly), Montbarrey, Montfabeau, and Vannans. Geography
The canton lies in the eastern part of the Jura department, bordering the cantons of Dole‑Nord‑Est, Dole‑Sud‑Est, and Authume. Its territory includes a mixture of agricultural land, river valleys (notably the Seille), and small forested areas.
Demographics
According to the most recent legal population figures published by INSEE (the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies), the canton had an estimated population of roughly 30 000 inhabitants in 2018. Population density is low to moderate, reflecting the predominantly rural character of the area.
Administration
The canton is represented by two departmental councilors (one man and one woman) elected for a six‑year term, in accordance with the parity rules governing French local elections. These councilors sit on the Conseil départemental du Jura.
