Canton of Signy-l'Abbaye

The Canton of Signy-l'Abbaye (French: canton de Signy-l'Abbaye) was an administrative subdivision of the Ardennes department in the former Champagne-Ardenne region of northern France. Its administrative seat was located in the commune of Signy-l'Abbaye.

Geographical scope
The canton comprised a grouping of rural communes in the western part of the Ardennes department. The exact number of constituent communes varied over time; at the time of its dissolution it included approximately twenty communes.

Demographics
According to the legal population figures published by the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) for 2012, the canton had a population of roughly 10,000 inhabitants. Detailed demographic breakdowns for individual communes are available from INSEE publications.

History
The canton was established as part of the nationwide cantonal organization instituted during the French Revolution and underwent several boundary adjustments in subsequent administrative reforms. It functioned as a electoral district for the election of councilors to the departmental council of the Ardennes.

In the course of the French canton reorganisation that took effect in March 2015, the Canton of Signy-l'Abbaye was disbanded. Its former communes were redistributed among newly defined cantons, principally the canton of Vouziers, as stipulated by the decree n° 2014‑203 of 21 February 2014 concerning the delimitation of cantons in the Ardennes department.

Administrative significance
Before its dissolution, the canton served as a unit of local administration for the delivery of certain public services, statistical aggregation, and as a constituency for departmental elections. Its administrative structures were overseen by a councilor elected from the canton to the departmental council.
