Canton of Fosses

The Canton of Fosses is an administrative subdivision of the Val‑d’Oise department in the Île‑de‑France region of northern France. It functions as a territorial entity for the election of representatives to the departmental council.

Creation and legal basis
The canton was established as part of the nationwide French canton reorganisation that took effect in March 2015. The reorganisation was implemented by the decree of 17 February 2014, which defined the new boundaries of cantons throughout the department.

Geographical scope
The canton is centred on the commune of Fosses, which serves as its administrative seat. It comprises a number of surrounding communes; the exact list of constituent communes was defined by the 2014 decree. As of the latest available data, the canton includes 24 communes.

Administrative role
Canton boundaries are primarily used for electoral purposes. Residents of the canton elect two councilors (one man and one woman) to the Val‑d’Oise departmental council, in accordance with the binomial mixed‑gender electoral system introduced by the 2013 law on the modernization of territorial public action.

Demographics and area
Comprehensive and up‑to‑date statistical figures for the canton’s total population and land area are compiled by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) based on the constituent communes. Specific aggregate data for the canton as a whole are not provided here.
