The Canton of Île de Ré is a former French administrative and electoral division located entirely on the Île de Ré island, within the Charente-Maritime department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It was abolished in 2015 as part of a nationwide territorial reform, although a new canton with the same name and geographical scope was established simultaneously under revised administrative and electoral rules.
History
Cantons in France were first established during the French Revolution, serving as administrative and electoral subdivisions of arrondissements. The historical Canton of Île de Ré existed for several decades, functioning primarily as an electoral district for the departmental council and an administrative grouping of communes on the island. The decree of 18 February 2014, which came into effect during the 2015 departmental elections, significantly reorganised the French canton system. This reform aimed to reduce the total number of cantons and ensure more equitable representation, particularly through the introduction of gender-balanced candidate pairs. As part of this reform, the existing Canton of Île de Ré was formally abolished.
However, recognizing the distinct geographical and historical identity of the Île de Ré, a new Canton of Île de Ré was simultaneously created. While it retained the same name and covers the identical geographic area (the entirety of the Île de Ré and its ten communes), its administrative and electoral definition was reconfigured according to the new legislation.
Geography and Composition
The historical Canton of Île de Ré encompassed all ten communes situated on the Île de Ré. These communes are:- [[Ars-en-Ré]]
- [[Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré]]
- [[La Couarde-sur-Mer]]
- [[La Flotte]]
- [[Loix]]
- [[Les Portes-en-Ré]]
- [[Rivedoux-Plage]]
- [[Saint-Clément-des-Baleines]]
- [[Saint-Martin-de-Ré]] (the historical administrative seat, or chef-lieu, and also the bureau centralisateur for the new canton)
- [[Sainte-Marie-de-Ré]]
The Île de Ré itself is a popular tourist destination, known for its picturesque villages, sandy beaches, salt marshes, and oyster farming. It is connected to the mainland city of La Rochelle by a bridge.
Role of Cantons (pre-2015)
Before the 2015 reforms, French cantons primarily served as:- Electoral Districts: Each canton elected a single councillor to the departmental council (formerly Conseil Général, now Conseil Départemental).
- Administrative Hubs: They acted as a basic local level for certain state services and administrative procedures, often grouping several smaller communes together for efficiency.
