The Canton of Écouves (French: canton d’Écouves) is an administrative subdivision of the Or Ne department in the Normandy region of north‑western France. It functions as a territorial division for the election of councilors to the departmental council of Or Ne.
Creation and legal basis
The canton was established as part of the nationwide French canton reorganisation that was implemented by decree n° 2014‑247 of 25 February 2014. The reorganisation came into effect at the departmental elections in March 2015, redefining the boundaries of many cantons across France, including the creation of the canton of Écouves.
Seat
The administrative seat of the canton is located in the commune of Écouves, a locality situated near the forest of Écouves, after which the canton is named.
Geographical context
The canton lies within the arrondissement of Alençon and is positioned in the central part of the Or Ne department. The area is characterised by a mix of agricultural land, forested zones—most notably the Écouves Forest—and small rural settlements.
Communal composition
The canton is composed of a collection of communes that were grouped together by the 2014 decree. The exact list and number of communes are defined in the official decree and may be consulted in the legal text (décret n° 2014‑247). As of its creation, the canton includes multiple communes, encompassing both the eponymous commune of Écouves and surrounding villages.
Political representation
Since the 2015 departmental elections, the canton elects two councilors (a man and a woman) to the Conseil départemental of Or Ne, in accordance with the binominal mixed‑gender electoral system introduced by the 2013 law on the modernization of territorial public action.
Demographics and area
Statistical data concerning the population and total area of the canton are compiled by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) based on the aggregation of the individual communes. Updated figures are published in the INSEE’s annual demographic reports.
