Cangwu County (Chinese: 藏族自治县; pinyin: Cángwǔ Xiàn) is a county‑level administrative division of the People's Republic of China, situated in the southeastern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is under the jurisdiction of the prefecture‑level city of Wuzhou, bordering Guangdong province to the east.
Geography
Cangwu County lies on the lower reaches of the Xi River (Xijiang), a tributary of the Pearl River system. The county covers an area of approximately 2,175 km² (≈840 sq mi). The terrain is predominantly low‑lying alluvial plains, with a subtropical monsoon climate; average annual temperature is about 21 °C, and the region receives roughly 1,600 mm of precipitation per year.
Administrative Divisions
The county is subdivided into several towns and townships. As of the most recent administrative adjustments, it comprises 10 towns (e.g., Chengxiang, Dongxiang, Mengcun) and 3 ethnic townships designated for the Zhuang and Yao minorities.
Demographics
According to the 2020 national census, Cangwu County had a population of roughly 750,000 residents. The majority are Han Chinese, with significant Zhuang, Yao, and other ethnic minority groups. The population density is about 345 inhabitants per km².
Economy
Cangwu’s economy is primarily agricultural, focusing on rice, sugarcane, fruits (especially lychees and longans), and aquaculture in the riverine areas. In recent years, the county has promoted industrial development, establishing zones for textiles, food processing, and light manufacturing. Transportation infrastructure, including the G75 Expressway and the Beijing–Guangzhou Railway, facilitates trade with neighboring Guangdong and the broader Pearl River Delta.
History
The region has been inhabited since ancient times; archaeological findings indicate Bronze Age settlements. Historically, the area formed part of the Nanyue Kingdom and later the commanderies of Han China. The modern county was established in 1914 during the Republic of China era, and its boundaries have been adjusted several times during the PRC administrative reforms, most recently in the 1990s when it was placed under the jurisdiction of Wuzhou.
Transportation
Cangwu County is served by the G75 (Linfen–Yandong) Expressway, which connects it to major cities such as Guangzhou and Nanning. The county also has rail links via the Wuhan–Guangzhou railway line, with a passenger station in Chengxiang Town. Provincial highways and river transport on the Xi River supplement local mobility.
Education and Culture
The county operates a network of primary and secondary schools, as well as a vocational technical college focusing on agricultural technologies and manufacturing. Cultural festivals reflect the ethnic diversity, featuring Zhuang Buluox (traditional song) and Yao drum performances.
