Camponotus festinatus

Camponotus festinatus is a species of carpenter ant in the subfamily Formicinae, family Formicidae. It was originally described by S. B. Buckley in 1866 as Formica festinata.

Taxonomy and Nomenclature

The species has a complex taxonomic history. It was transferred to the genus Camponotus by Emery in 1893 and has been variously treated as a subspecies of Camponotus fumidus before being elevated back to full species status by Snelling in 1968. A neotype was designated by Snelling (2006) from Austin, Travis County, Texas, as no original type material is known to exist. Synonyms include Camponotus fumidus pubicornis Emery, 1893 and Camponotus fumidus spurcus Wheeler, 1910.

Identification

Camponotus festinatus is a medium-sized species within the C. festinatus complex. Major workers (soldiers) have a head length of 2.75–3.00 mm and head width of 2.45–2.75 mm. The body is yellowish brown with variable darker brown infuscation, particularly on the head and gaster. Diagnostic features include: a well-defined median ridge (carina) on the clypeus; an anterior margin of the clypeal median lobe that is broadly transverse or shallowly concave; erect setae along the lateral margins of the head; and erect setae on the antennal scape shaft in major workers and queens.

Distribution

The species ranges from central Texas west to the mountains of southern and central Arizona, and south into adjacent states in northern Mexico. The westernmost records are from central Arizona (Maricopa, Pinal, and Yavapai counties). The latitudinal range extends from approximately 37.99°N to 17.99°N.

Habitat and Biology

Camponotus festinatus is primarily found in oak woodlands. Nests are constructed in soil, commonly beneath stones or other covering objects, most often on rocky hillsides. The species is an exclusively liquid feeder, consuming sap from trees or juices from deceased animals. Queens are claustral foundresses, meaning they sequester themselves in a chamber to raise the first set of workers without seeking additional food. Colonies are monogynous (single queen).

Chemical Ecology

Research by LeBrun et al. (2015) demonstrated that C. festinatus exhibits acidopore grooming behavior, using formic acid to detoxify alkaloid venoms produced by other ant species, a trait expressed widely across formicine ants.

Associations with Other Organisms

The species has been recorded as a xenobiont (a guest species in the nests of other ants) for Monomorium minimum and Pachycondyla harpax.

Taxonomic Complex

Snelling (2006) revised the Camponotus festinatus complex in the United States, which includes the following species: Camponotus festinatus, Camponotus absquatulator (described as new), Camponotus fragilis (revived from synonymy), Camponotus microps (described as new), Camponotus pudorosus (recognized as distinct), and Camponotus vafer. The complex is characterized by a combination of clypeal, setal, and color features that distinguish it from other Nearctic Camponotus groups.
