Description
Calyptra thalictri is a medium-sized nocturnal moth with a wingspan typically ranging from 35 to 45 mm. The forewings are brownish‑gray with indistinct darker transverse lines and a subtle, pale medial band. Hindwings are lighter, often with a faint discal spot. The proboscis is well‑developed, capable of piercing soft fruit skins and, in some individuals, animal skin to obtain fluid.
Distribution
The species is native to the Palearctic region. Its range extends from central and eastern Europe (including the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, and Russia) through Siberia and into East Asia, reaching Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Populations are generally associated with temperate woodlands and meadow habitats where host plants occur.
Habitat
Adults are found in deciduous and mixed forests, meadow edges, and gardens where suitable nectar or fruit sources are available. Larvae develop on a variety of herbaceous plants, most notably species of the genus Thalictrum (meadow-rues), from which the specific epithet “thalictri” is derived.
Life cycle
