Definition
Caledonia Reds was a professional rugby union club in Scotland that competed in domestic and European competitions between 1996 and 1998.
Overview
Formed as part of the Scottish Rugby Union’s (SRU) transition to professionalism, the Caledonia Reds represented the historic “North and Midlands” district, encompassing the northern and central regions of Scotland. The club participated in the Scottish Inter‑District Championship and the European Heineken Cup during its brief existence. In 1998, the SRU amalgamated Caledonia Reds with Glasgow Rugby, creating the Glasgow Caledonians (later renamed Glasgow Warriors).
Etymology/Origin
The name “Caledonia” is the Latin term traditionally used for Scotland, while “Reds” referenced the team’s primary playing colour. The designation therefore signified a representative side from the Caledonia region wearing red.
