Calvin Lane Alley (October 10, 1915 – November 10, 1970) was an American editorial cartoonist best known for his long tenure at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked from 1945 until his death in 1970. He also contributed to the syndicated cartoon panel Hambone's Meditations and created the comic strip The Ryatts.
Early life and family
Alley was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of James Pinckney Alley, the creator of Hambone's Meditations and the first editorial cartoonist at The Commercial Appeal (1916). After his father's death in 1934, Cal Alley, his mother Nona, and his brother James assumed responsibility for the Hambone panel.
Career
Alley's professional cartooning began in 1939 with the Kansas City Journal in Missouri, where he served as an editorial cartoonist. Following the Journal’s closure in 1942, he worked for the Nashville Banner. In 1945 he joined The Commercial Appeal as its editorial cartoonist, a position he held for 25 years. While at the newspaper, Alley launched the family‑oriented comic strip The Ryatts in 1954; the strip was syndicated by the Post‑Hall Syndicate and ran (with variations such as “Winky Ryatt”) until 1994. The series featured a multigenerational family and drew inspiration from Alley’s own experiences.
Alley retired from The Commercial Appeal in 1965 but continued to be associated with the paper until his death. He died of cancer at age 55 on November 10, 1970.
Awards and recognition
In 1955 Alley received the Sigma Delta Chi Distinguished Service Award for an editorial cartoon. He was later inducted into the Tennessee Hall of Fame for his contributions to newspaper journalism in the state.
Legacy
Alley's work is preserved in collections such as the Cal Alley Collection at the Memphis Public Library, which includes his editorial cartoons covering World War II, regional politics, and the civil‑rights era. His contributions to American editorial cartooning and syndicated comic strips are documented in reference works including the Lambiek Comiclopedia and various newspaper archives.
