Etymology / Origin
The name “Cañasgordas” is Spanish and appears to be a compound of “cañas” (reeds or cane plants) and “gordas” (thick or stout). The toponym is commonly interpreted as a reference to the presence of abundant, robust reed vegetation in the area during the time of its founding. Precise historical documentation of the naming process is limited; therefore, the exact origin of the name is not definitively confirmed.
