CTC (Russian: СТС, an acronym often pronounced as "STS") is a Russian federal television channel, one of Russia's largest privately-owned entertainment broadcasters. It primarily targets a young and family audience with a focus on light entertainment programming.
History
CTC began broadcasting on December 1, 1996, initially established by the StoryFirst Communications group, which later evolved into CTC Media. The channel quickly positioned itself as a key player in the Russian television landscape, emphasizing entertainment content rather than news or political programming. Over its history, CTC Media, the parent company of CTC channel, experienced several ownership changes. Notably, in 2015, due to new Russian legislation restricting foreign ownership in media, Swedish-owned Modern Times Group (MTG) sold its stake in CTC Media to UTH Russia, a subsidiary of Alisher Usmanov's USM Holdings. Subsequently, CTC Media became part of the National Media Group (NMG).
Programming
CTC's programming strategy is centered on entertainment. The channel is particularly renowned for its substantial output of original Russian television series, especially sitcoms and comedy-dramas, many of which have achieved significant popularity and high ratings. Its content slate also includes:
- Television Series: A mix of internally produced Russian series and acquired international dramas and comedies.
- Reality Shows: Various formats designed to appeal to its core demographic.
- Feature Films: Broadcasts a selection of both Russian and international cinematic releases.
- Animated Series: Features animated content, catering to younger viewers and family audiences.
- Talk Shows and Game Shows: Engaging interactive and discussion-based programs.
The channel aims to deliver a positive, humorous, and general entertainment viewing experience, positioning itself as a family-friendly option with a strong appeal to youth.
Reach and Operations
CTC broadcasts throughout the Russian Federation and is also accessible in certain countries within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It is a flagship channel of the CTC Media holding, which also operates other prominent Russian channels such as Domashny and Che. The channel's content is distributed across multiple platforms, including terrestrial broadcast, cable, satellite television, and online streaming services.
