Cottari Kanakaiya Nayudu (1902–1967), commonly known as C. K. Nayudu, was an Indian cricketer who became the first captain of the Indian Test cricket team.
Overview
Born on 15 April 1902 in Nagpur, then part of the Central Provinces of British India, Nayudu emerged as one of the leading Indian batsmen of the 1920s and 1930s. He made his first‑class debut in 1920 and quickly established a reputation for aggressive, technically sound right‑handed batting. In 1932, he was appointed captain of India’s inaugural Test side, which played its first Test match against England at Lord’s. Over the course of his career, Nayudu played 14 Test matches (1932–1936) and scored 618 runs at an average of 31.44, including a highest score of 113. In first‑class cricket he amassed more than 13,000 runs, recording 30 centuries.
Beyond his playing career, Nayudu contributed to Indian cricket as an administrator and selector. He was honoured with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth‑highest civilian award, in 1956 for his services to sport. Nayudu passed away on 14 November 1967 in Indore.
