Byron Chamberlain

Byron Chamberlain (born February 21, 1971) is a former American professional football player who played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons. He is noted for his contributions to the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, and Indianapolis Colts, and earned a Pro Bowl selection following the 1998 season.

Early life and education
Byron Chamberlain was born in Long Beach, California. He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where he participated in football and track and field. After graduating, he enrolled at the University of Colorado Boulder and played college football for the Colorado Buffaloes as a tight end, earning All‑Big Eight Conference honors in his senior year.

College career
During his tenure with the Buffaloes (1990–1994), Chamberlain was recognized for his pass‑catching ability and blocking proficiency. He recorded 87 receptions for 1,152 yards and eight touchdowns, contributing to Colorado’s appearance in the 1991 Orange Bowl. His performance led to his selection in the 1995 NFL Draft.

Professional career

  • NFL Draft – Chamberlain was selected in the fifth round (156th overall) of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. He was released during preseason training camp.

  • Minnesota Vikings (1995–1998) – Chamberlain signed with the Vikings in 1995. Over four seasons, he became a regular starter, amassing 211 receptions for 2,347 yards and 15 touchdowns. His play helped the Vikings achieve three consecutive NFC Central division titles (1996–1998). He was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 1998 season, recognizing him as one of the league’s top tight ends.

  • New England Patriots (1999) – Chamberlain joined the Patriots for the 1999 season, appearing in 13 games and recording 31 receptions for 276 yards and two touchdowns.
