Buzzoven is an American sludge metal band formed in 1990 in Weymouth, North Carolina. The group is recognized for its abrasive sound that blends heavy, downtuned guitar riffs, slow tempos, and vocal styles ranging from guttural shouts to spoken-word passages. Buzzoven is frequently associated with the early 1990s underground metal scene and is noted for influencing the development of the sludge and doom metal subgenres.
History
Buzzoven was founded by vocalist and guitarist Dale "Slank" Crover (also known as Dale "D. B." Smith) and drummer Ashley "The Smith" Smith. The original lineup released a self-titled demo cassette in 1991, which garnered attention within the regional hardcore and metal circuits. In 1993, the band signed with the independent label Man's Ruin Records, releasing their debut full-length album, Sore Ass Skull. Subsequent releases on labels such as Hydra Head Records and Brainticket Records solidified their presence in the underground metal community.
Throughout the 1990s, Buzzoven experienced several lineup changes, with Crover remaining the primary songwriter and constant member. The group disbanded briefly in the early 2000s but reformed in 2007, continuing to perform live and produce new material. Their later releases include V·D·E·G·T·A·P·I·V (2021) and various split EPs and live recordings.
Musical Style and Influence
Buzzoven's music combines the slow, heavy characteristics of doom metal with the aggression and raw production typical of sludge and hardcore punk. Their lyrical content often addresses themes of existential dread, socio-political unrest, and personal turmoil. Critics and scholars of heavy music have cited Buzzoven as a seminal act that contributed to the shaping of sludge metal alongside contemporaries such as Eyehategod and the Melvins.
