History and Development
Butteryhaugh was originally planned as the second of five villages intended to house forestry workers employed in the development of Kielder Forest. The construction of the village took place during the mid‑20th century as part of a broader scheme to support timber extraction and forest management in the region. However, advances in mechanisation reduced the demand for a large workforce, and consequently the remaining three planned villages were never built.

Administratively, Butteryhaugh is part of the Northumberland unitary authority and is represented in the UK Parliament by the MP for Hexham. The post town for the area is Hexham, and the postcode district is NE48.
