James “Buster” Douglas (born April 7, 1960) is an American former professional boxer who competed in the heavyweight division. He is best known for defeating Mike Tyson on February 11, 1990 to win the undisputed heavyweight championship.
Overview
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Douglas began his professional boxing career in 1981 after an amateur stint that included a bronze medal at the 1979 Pan American Games. Over a ten‑year career he compiled a record of 36 wins (31 by knockout), 6 losses, and 1 draw. The most significant bout of his career occurred on February 11, 1990 at the Tokyo Dome, where, as a 42‑to‑1 underdog, he knocked out the defending champion Mike Tyson in the 10th round. The victory is widely regarded as one of the greatest upsets in boxing history. Douglas lost the title in his first defense to Evander Holyfield later that year. He retired from boxing in 1999 and has since worked as a trainer and motivational speaker.

The surname Douglas is of Scottish origin, derived from the Gaelic “Dubh Glas” meaning “dark water” or “black stream.” No additional etymological significance is attached to the moniker within the context of his boxing career.
