History
Burkina Faso, formerly known as Upper Volta, achieved independence from France on 5 August 1960. Sweden recognized the new state shortly thereafter and the two countries established diplomatic relations in the early 1960s. Relations have traditionally been characterised by Swedish development assistance and political dialogue.
Diplomatic missions
* Burkina Faso* maintains an embassy in Stockholm, which is also accredited to other Nordic countries.
* Sweden* does not have a resident embassy in Burkina Faso; Swedish diplomatic representation is handled through its embassy in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and an honorary consulate in Ouagadougou.
Development cooperation
Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) has been a major partner in Burkina Faso since the 1970s. Swedish aid has focused on:
* Agriculture and food security – support for small‑holder farmers, irrigation and value‑chain development.
* Health – programmes for maternal and child health, malaria control and the strengthening of health systems.
* Governance and human rights – assistance for public‑sector reforms, decentralisation and civic participation.
Annual Swedish official development assistance (ODA) to Burkina Faso has varied, with figures reported by the OECD ranging from roughly US 70 million to US 120 million in recent years.
Economic and trade relations
Trade between the two countries remains limited. Swedish exports to Burkina Faso consist mainly of machinery, vehicles, and pharmaceuticals, while Burkina Faso’s exports to Sweden are largely agricultural products, such as cotton and cocoa beans. Swedish companies have shown interest in mining and infrastructure projects in Burkina Faso, but concrete investments are modest and subject to periodic review.
Cultural and educational links
Cultural exchange programmes are facilitated by the Swedish Institute and various NGOs. Scholarships under the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency enable Burkinabe students to study in Sweden, particularly in fields related to development, engineering, and public health.
High‑level visits
Occasional high‑level visits have taken place, including trips by Swedish ministers for development cooperation and by Burkinabe officials to Sweden for bilateral talks on aid, trade, and security collaboration.
Current issues
Both governments continue to discuss cooperation on climate‑change mitigation, renewable‑energy projects, and the promotion of gender equality. Sweden’s aid policy emphasizes transparency and effectiveness, aligning with Burkina Faso’s national development plans.
