Bukovica, Rožaje

Bukovica is a rural settlement located in the Rožaje Municipality in eastern Montenegro. It is situated in the mountainous region characteristic of the historical Sandžak area, near the borders with Serbia and Kosovo.

According to official census data from the Statistical Office of Montenegro (MONSTAT), the population of Bukovica has experienced a decline in recent decades, mirroring a broader trend of rural-to-urban migration in northern Montenegro. In the 2003 census, the village had 529 inhabitants, while the 2011 census recorded a decrease to 420 inhabitants. The demographic composition of the settlement is predominantly Bosniak.

The local economy is primarily centered on traditional primary sector activities, including small-scale agriculture, livestock farming, and forestry. The village is connected to the municipal center of Rožaje by local road infrastructure. Like many highland settlements in the region, Bukovica faces challenges related to economic development and the maintenance of public services, which has historically contributed to the emigration of its population to larger urban centers or abroad.
