Bukit Serampang (state constituency)

Bukit Serampang was a state electoral constituency in the Malaysian state of Johor. It was represented in the Johor State Legislative Assembly from the first post‑independence state elections in 1959 until the constituency’s abolition ahead of the 2018 state election.

History

  • Creation: The constituency was created for the 1959 Johor state election, the first state election held after Malaya’s independence in 1957.
  • Abolition: Bukit Serampang was dissolved in the 2018 electoral redistribution, which reduced the number of state constituencies in Johor and reorganised electoral boundaries.

Geographical coverage

The constituency was designated as N07 in the Johor state electoral map. Its boundaries encompassed the town of Serampang and surrounding rural areas within the district of Kluang, Johor. Exact delineations changed over successive redistributions, but the seat consistently covered the Bukit Serampang locality.

Representation

Throughout its existence, Bukit Serampang elected a single member to the Johor State Legislative Assembly using the first‑past‑the‑post voting system. The seat was contested by candidates from the major political parties, primarily the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and its Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, as well as opposition parties at various times.

Significance

Bukit Serampang functioned as a rural constituency that contributed to the political composition of the Johor State Legislative Assembly for nearly six decades. Its abolition in 2018 reflected broader electoral reforms aimed at balancing voter numbers across constituencies.
