Bryotropha terrella is a species of moth in the family Gelechiidae. It was originally described by Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller in 1775 under the name Gelechia terrella, and later transferred to the genus Bryotropha.
Taxonomy
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Arthropoda
- Class: Insecta
- Order: Lepidoptera
- Family: Gelechiidae
- Genus: Bryotropha Heinemann, 1870
- Species: B. terrella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
Description
Adult moths of B. terrella are small, with a wingspan typically ranging from 10 to 13 mm. The forewings are mottled grey–brown, often with darker transverse markings that provide camouflage against mossy substrates. The hindwings are generally paler, translucent grey. Detailed morphological characteristics, such as genitalia structures, are used for reliable identification and differentiation from closely related Bryotropha species.
Distribution and Habitat
Bryotropha terrella is primarily a Palearctic species. Its confirmed range includes much of Europe, extending from the British Isles and Scandinavia in the north to the Mediterranean region in the south, and eastward into parts of western Russia. The species inhabits open, xeric to mesic environments where mosses are abundant, such as heathlands, moorlands, and forest clearings.
Biology and Ecology
- Life cycle: The species is multivoltine in warmer parts of its range, with at least two generations per year. Adults are typically on the wing from late spring through early autumn.
- Larval host plants: Larvae are believed to feed on various mosses (bryophytes). Observations have recorded feeding on species of the genera Ceratodon, Hylocomium, and Tortula, although comprehensive host‑plant records are limited.
- Behavior: Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to light, which facilitates monitoring through light‑trap surveys.
Conservation Status
No specific conservation assessment has been published for Bryotropha terrella. It is generally considered to be a widespread and locally common species throughout much of its range, and therefore not currently regarded as threatened.
