Bryce Vine (born Bryce Christopher Ross-Johnson on June 16, 1988) is an American rapper and singer. He is best known for his 2018 single "Drew Barrymore" and his 2019 debut album Carnival.
Early Life
Bryce Christopher Ross-Johnson was born on June 16, 1988, in New York City, New York, to Tracey Ross (an actress) and Brad Johnson. When he was one year old, his mother moved with him to Los Angeles, California, to pursue an acting career. He spent most of his youth in Westlake Village, California. At age 13, after his father introduced him to 1990s R&B, he convinced his mother to buy him a guitar and taught himself to play.
Career
In 2011, Vine auditioned for the Oxygen reality series The Glee Project, a competition that served as an audition for the Fox show Glee. He became one of twelve finalists but was the first contestant eliminated. He later stated he was thankful for the elimination, saying it "was not the right place for me."
After The Glee Project, Vine left Berklee College of Music. He adopted his stage name "Vine" as a shortened form of "vinyl." He met producer Nolan Lambroza and signed to Lambroza's label Kiva House Lambroza. On April 22, 2014, he released his debut EP, Lazy Fair (a play on the French phrase "laissez-faire"), which produced the minor online hits "Sour Patch Kids" and "Guilty Pleasure."
A second EP, Night Circus, was released on March 21, 2016. In 2017, Vine released the single "Drew Barrymore," which peaked at number 46 on the US Billboard Hot 100. His debut album, Carnival, was released on July 26, 2019, and peaked at number 99 on the US Billboard 200. The second single from the album, "La La Land" (featuring YG), peaked at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100. His second studio album, Motel California, was released on May 2, 2025.
Musical Style and Influences
Vine's music blends pop, hip-hop, and alternative rock. He has cited Third Eye Blind as a major influence, noting that they write "intelligent and honest lyrics with an infectious chorus." He is also heavily influenced by rapper J. Cole, particularly appreciating his storytelling ability and clear messaging.
