Brodiaea orcuttii

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Plantae
  • Clade: Angiosperms → Monocots
  • Order: Asparagales
  • Family: Themidaceae (sometimes placed in Asparagaceae, subfamily Brodiaeoideae)
  • Genus: Brodiaea
  • Species: Brodiaea orcuttii Greene

Common name

  • Orcutt's brodiaea

Description
Brodiaea orcuttii is a perennial herb arising from a corm. It produces a basal rosette of linear to lanceolate leaves and an erect flowering stem that can reach 10–30 cm tall. The inflorescence consists of an umbel of 3–12 bell‑shaped flowers. Each flower bears six tepals, typically pale lavender to violet with darker midveins, and six stamens with prominent filaments. The fruit is a capsular seed pod that splits open at maturity.

Distribution and Habitat
The species is endemic to southern California, USA. Its range includes the southern Santa Monica Mountains, the Peninsular Ranges, and parts of the San Bernardino and San Diego counties. B. orcuttii occupies chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and open woodland habitats, often on well‑drained, sandy or granitic soils at elevations from sea level to approximately 1,200 m.

Ecology
Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer (typically May–June). The flowers are pollinated primarily by native bees and other insects attracted to the nectar and pollen. The corms enable the plant to survive the region’s summer drought conditions.

Conservation Status

  • NatureServe global rank: G3 (Vulnerable) – indicating a moderate risk of extinction due to a relatively restricted range and habitat pressures.
  • Main threats: habitat loss from urban development, recreational off‑road vehicle use, and invasive plant species that alter fire regimes.

Taxonomic Notes
The specific epithet orcuttii honors Charles Russell Orcutt (1851–1929), an American botanist and naturalist who collected extensively in California and Mexico. The species was first described by Edward Lee Greene in 1886.
