Brode, Vransko

Brode is a small settlement located in the Municipality of Vransko in central Slovenia. It forms part of the traditional region of Styria and is included in the Savinja Statistical Region. The settlement lies in a hilly area east of the town of Vransko and is positioned at an elevation of approximately 370 metres (1,214 ft) above sea level.

Geography
Brode covers an area of roughly 1.2 km² (0.46 sq mi). The settlement is composed of a few dispersed farms and residential structures, typical of the rural landscape of the Savinja valley. The surrounding terrain consists of mixed forests, agricultural fields, and small waterways that contribute to the region’s hydrography.

Demographics
According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, Brode had a population of 42 residents as of the 2020 census. The settlement exhibits a low population density, reflective of its status as a sparsely inhabited rural locality.

Brode is administratively part of the Municipality of Vransko (Občina Vransko). The municipality is governed by a mayor and a municipal council, which provide local services and infrastructure to Brode and neighboring settlements.

History and Etymology
The name “Brode” is derived from the Slovene common noun brod, meaning “ford” or “shallow crossing,” suggesting a historical reference to a crossing point over a local watercourse. Historical records specifically mentioning Brode are limited; however, the settlement’s inclusion in cadastral surveys and municipal documents dates back to at least the early 20th century.

Infrastructure
Transportation to and from Brode is primarily via local roads that connect the settlement to Vransko and other nearby villages. Public services such as education, healthcare, and commerce are accessed in the municipal center of Vransko, located a few kilometres to the west.

Cultural and Natural Features
Brode does not host notable cultural institutions or significant historical monuments. The surrounding natural environment offers opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling, typical of the Savinja region’s recreational offerings.
