Etymology / Origin
The name Brníčko is a diminutive form derived from the older (unattested) name Brníce (also recorded as Brnieče), which itself is a diminutive of Brní (or Brnie). The root brn in Old Czech denoted “clay, mud, slime,” indicating that the original settlement was likely founded on a clay‑rich or marshy site. German-language sources from the 17th century render the name as Brünles and later as Brünnles, influenced by the nearby city of Brno (Brünn in German), although no historical connection between the two places exists.
Characteristics
- Geography: The village is situated at the foot of a hill topped by the ruins of a 14th‑century castle, the former seat of the Tunkl family of Zábřeh and Brníčko.
- History: The first written record of Brníčko dates to 1350. The castle, first mentioned in 1353, was expanded in 1471 and abandoned in the 16th century.
- Demographics: Population figures have fluctuated over the centuries, reaching a peak of 1,090 in 1910 before declining to the present level.
- Symbols: The municipal coat of arms, granted in 2003, derives from the Tunkl family’s heraldry and depicts a silver fish above castle walls. The village flag was officially adopted at the same time.
- Community life: Since 1888 the village has maintained a volunteer fire brigade. The municipal office displays the Moravian flag annually on 5 July.
- Cultural monuments: Protected sites include the castle ruins, a war memorial to victims of the World Wars (erected 1923), and the late‑Romanesque single‑nave Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which was modified in the late 18th century and fitted with electronic tower clocks in 2005.
