Definition British Somaliland was a British protectorate in the Horn of Africa, established in the late 19th century and located in the northern part of the present-day territory of Somalia.
Overview British Somaliland was declared a British protectorate in 1884 following treaties signed with local Somali sultanates. The region served as a strategic outpost for the British Empire, located along the Gulf of Aden near the entrance to the Red Sea. It bordered French Somaliland (later Djibouti) to the west, Italian Somaliland to the south, and Ethiopia to the southwest and south. The capital of the protectorate was Berbera, a major port city.
The territory remained under British administration until June 26, 1960, when it gained independence as the State of Somaliland. Five days later, on July 1, 1960, it united with the former Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Republic.
Etymology/Origin The name "British Somaliland" derives from the ethnic Somali people who inhabit the region and the designation "British" indicating colonial administration by the United Kingdom. The term "Somaliland" has been historically used to denote the land inhabited by the Somali people, particularly in the northwestern region of the Horn of Africa.
