Brian P. Stack

Brian P. Stack (born January 5, 1966) is an American attorney and Democratic Party politician from New Jersey. He has served concurrently as a member of the New Jersey Senate, representing the 33rd Legislative District, and as the mayor of Union City, New Jersey.

Early life and education
Stack was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Saint Peter’s College (now Saint Peter’s University) in Jersey City and received a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law.

Legal career
After completing his law degree, Stack was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar Association and practiced law in the Hoboken area, focusing on civil litigation and municipal law.

Political career

Mayor of Union City
Stack was first elected mayor of Union City in a special election in 2000, succeeding the late Mayor Rudy Garcia. He has been re‑elected to the mayoralty in subsequent municipal elections and, as of 2024, remains the incumbent. During his tenure, Stack has emphasized fiscal responsibility, public safety, and infrastructure improvements.

New Jersey Legislature

  • General Assembly: Stack was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly from the 33rd District in 2003 and served a single two‑year term.
  • State Senate: In 2008, Stack was appointed to the New Jersey Senate to fill a vacancy in the 33rd District. He won a special election later that year and has been re‑elected in 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021. In the Senate, he has served on committees including the Budget and Appropriations Committee, the Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, and the Transportation Committee. Stack is known for his work on health‑care policy, transportation funding, and urban development.

Legislative initiatives
