Early Life and Education
Brian Lewerke was born on October 11, 1996, in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, United States. He attended Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School, where he played high school football as a quarterback. During his senior season, Lewerke threw for 1,897 yards and 21 touchdowns, leading his team to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class AA playoffs. He was rated as a three-star recruit by major scouting services and received scholarship offers from several Division I programs.
College Career
Michigan State University (2015–2019)
Lewerke enrolled at Michigan State University and joined the Spartans football program as a quarterback. After redshirting his true freshman year (2015), he served as a backup during the 2016 season, appearing in limited action. In 2017, Lewerke earned his first start in the season opener against Western Michigan after the starting quarterback was injured. He completed 22 of 28 passes for 292 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, contributing to a 28–14 victory.
During the 2018 season, Lewerke started six games, compiling 1,385 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He shared playing time with fellow quarterback Payton Thorne, and the Spartans finished the season with a 7–6 record, culminating in a victory over Arizona State in the 2018 Redbox Bowl.
In 2019, Lewerke entered his senior year in a quarterback competition with Thorne. He started the first two games of the season, recording 366 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. After a 7–8 overall record and limited playing time, Lewerke announced his intention to transfer.
Transfer to University of North Texas (2020)
Lewerke transferred to the University of North Texas as a graduate student and was eligible to play immediately for the Meanings. He started all 12 games of the 2020 season, posting 3,203 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. His total passing yards ranked among the top performances in North Texas program history for a single season. The team finished with a 4–6 record.
Professional Career
Draft and NFL Opportunities
Lewerke declared for the 2021 NFL Draft but was not selected. He subsequently signed as an undrafted free agent with the Seattle Seahawks but was released before the start of preseason games.
Alternative Leagues
In 2022, Lewerke signed with the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL (X Football League) but was released during roster cuts. He later joined the United States Football League (USFL) as a practice squad member for the Birmingham Stallions; however, he did not appear in regular‑season games.
Personal Life
Brian Lewerke is married to Sierra Lewerke. The couple has a son, born in 2021. Lewerke has been involved in community outreach programs, particularly youth football camps in his native Pennsylvania, where he shares his experience with aspiring players.
