Brian Hope‑Taylor (1900 – 17 July 1969) was a British archaeologist, historian, and television presenter. He specialised in the archaeology of Roman and early medieval Britain and was instrumental in popularising archaeological research through mass media.
Hope‑Taylor presented a number of BBC television programmes in the 1950s and 1960s, most notably The Romans (1968), which combined on‑site fieldwork with scholarly commentary. The series was accompanied by a book of the same title, published in 1968, and contributed to a broader public interest in the Roman period in Britain.
In addition to his broadcasting work, Hope‑Taylor authored several scholarly and popular works, including The Anglo‑Saxon Kingdoms (1964) and The Roman Frontier in Britain (date uncertain). He held academic appointments at the University of Cambridge and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
His career combined rigorous archaeological investigation with outreach, influencing both academic circles and the general public’s understanding of Britain’s ancient past.
