Born in 1969 in the United States, Helquist studied illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, graduating in 1992. He began his professional career creating artwork for greeting cards, magazines, and commercial commissions. In 1999, he was selected to illustrate the first volume of A Series of Unfortunate Events, a partnership that continued through the series' twelve books, published between 1999 and 2006.
