The generic name combines the Spanish word brete (“ravine” or “gully”) with the Greek suchus (“crocodile”), referencing the locality where the fossil material was recovered. The specific epithet honors Argentine paleontologist José F. Bonaparte.

Discovery and Material
Bretesuchus is known from fragmentary skeletal remains, primarily a relatively complete skull and associated mandibular elements, recovered from early Paleocene (Danian) deposits of the Salta Province in northwestern Argentina. The fossil assemblage was described in a peer‑reviewed publication in the early 2000s.
