Brendan Coyle

Brendan Coyle (born 16 December 1963) is an English actor of Irish descent. He is best known for his role as John Bates, the valet, in the ITV period drama Downton Abbey (2010–2015), for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and two British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA). He also won a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble cast.

Early Life and Career Born David Coyle in Corby, Northamptonshire, England, he later adopted the stage name Brendan Coyle. He is of Irish parentage; his mother was from County Tyrone and his father from County Laois. Coyle studied drama at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.

His early career included significant stage work, earning critical acclaim and an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1999 for his performance as Brendan in Conor McPherson's play The Weir. He also received a New York Drama Desk Award for his role in the Broadway transfer of the play.

Television and Film Coyle gained wider recognition through various television roles. He played Robert Timmins in the BBC period drama Lark Rise to Candleford (2008–2010), a patriarch of a rural family. Other notable television appearances include:
