Brenda Fricker (born 28 February 1945) is an Irish actress known for her work in film, television, and theatre. She began her acting career in the 1960s, initially performing with the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and later appearing in various stage productions throughout the United Kingdom.
Fricker achieved international recognition for her role as Maggie FitzGerald in the 1992 film The Crying Game, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She is also known for her performances in My Left Foot (1989), A Month in the Country (1987), and The Field (1990). In addition to her film work, Fricker has appeared in television series such as The Black Tower (1985) and the BBC drama The Red Riding Trilogy (2002–2006).
Her career has been marked by a range of character roles, often portraying strong, nuanced women. Fricker has received multiple accolades, including a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for The Crying Game and the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Guard (2000).
