Brasher is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. It is situated in the northern part of the county, approximately 15 miles (24 km) south of the Canada–United States border and about 30 miles (48 km) east of the county seat, Potsdam. According to the United States Census of 2020, Brasher had a population of 1,695 residents.
History
The area that became Brasher was first settled around the turn of the 19th century. The town was organized in 1802 from portions of the adjacent towns of Hopkinton and De Kalb. It was named after Samuel Brasher, an early landowner and local official. Throughout the 19th century, agriculture and timber harvesting were the principal economic activities, and small hamlets such as Brasher Falls and Braggs Corners developed around mills and crossroads.
Geography
Brasher occupies a total area of 52.9 square miles (137 km²), of which 52.5 square miles (136 km²) is land and 0.4 square miles (1 km²) (0.75 %) is water. The town is traversed by the St. Regis River, which flows southeastward through the hamlet of Brasher Falls. The terrain consists of a mix of rolling hills, farmland, and forested areas. New York State Route 11B provides the primary east–west highway through the town, while County Roads 44 and 48 serve local traffic.
Demographics
Based on the 2020 census, the town’s population density was approximately 32 people per square mile (12 people per km²). The racial composition was predominantly White (over 96 %), with small representations of African American, Native American, Asian, and individuals of two or more races. Households in Brasher averaged 2.5 persons, and the median household income reported in the 2019 American Community Survey was $51,200.
Government
Brasher operates under a town council form of government, headed by a Town Supervisor and a board of four council members. The town provides services including road maintenance, land use planning, and volunteer fire protection. Law enforcement is provided by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office.
Education
Public education for Brasher residents is administered by the Brasher Falls–Winfield Central School District, which operates an elementary school and a combined junior‑senior high school located in the hamlet of Brasher Falls.
