Brahmanpara Upazila

Brahmanpara Upazila is an upazila (sub-district) located in the Cumilla District of the Chittagong Division in southeastern Bangladesh. It is situated in the northeastern part of Cumilla District.

Geography

Brahmanpara Upazila lies approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Cumilla city. It is bordered by Muradnagar Upazila to the north, Burichang Upazila to the south, Debidwar Upazila to the west, and the Indian state of Tripura to the east. The Gumti River is a significant geographical feature, flowing through the upazila and influencing its fertile plains, which are characteristic of the Ganges Delta. The terrain is generally flat, making it conducive to agriculture.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Bangladesh Census, Brahmanpara Upazila had a total population of 200,415. The majority of the inhabitants are Bengali Muslims, with a small presence of other religious minorities, primarily Hindus. The population density is high, reflecting the typical demographic patterns of rural Bangladesh.

Administration

Brahmanpara Upazila is divided into 8 union parishads, which are the lowest administrative units in Bangladesh. These unions are further subdivided into mouzas and villages. Besides farming, there are small-scale businesses, local markets, and a limited number of cottage industries. Remittances from migrant workers also play a role in boosting the local economy.

The upazila hosts a number of educational institutions, including government and non-government primary schools, secondary schools, madrasas, and a few colleges. For healthcare, Brahmanpara Upazila has an Upazila Health Complex, along with various union-level health and family welfare centers, and private clinics, providing basic medical services to its residents.

Transport

Brahmanpara Upazila is connected to the district headquarters in Cumilla and neighboring upazilas through a network of local roads. Common modes of transportation include rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, and buses. Waterways, particularly the Gumti River, are utilized for local transport and irrigation purposes.
