Brack Maggard

Brack Maggard (May 29, 1924 – April 20, 2007) was an American Democratic politician who served for many years in the Kentucky General Assembly. A prominent figure from Eastern Kentucky, Maggard represented districts in Knott, Letcher, Perry, and surrounding counties in both the Kentucky House of Representatives and the Kentucky State Senate, becoming a respected advocate for his region's interests.

Early Life and Education

Brack Maggard was born in Knott County, Kentucky, to Silas and Rebecca Maggard. He received his early education in the local public schools. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, Maggard returned to Knott County, where he became involved in local business and community activities, which served as a foundation for his eventual political career.

Political Career

Maggard's political career began with his election to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1968. He served in the House until 1974, representing the 92nd District.

In 1975, Maggard successfully ran for the Kentucky State Senate, representing the 34th District (which included parts of Knott, Letcher, and Perry counties, among others, with district lines shifting over time). He was a long-serving senator, holding his seat for over two decades until his retirement in 1998.

During his extensive tenure in the General Assembly, Maggard was known for his strong advocacy for the needs of Eastern Kentucky. He championed legislation related to economic development, education, infrastructure improvements, and healthcare access in the historically underserved Appalachian region of the state. He served on numerous key committees, including Appropriations and Revenue, Transportation, and Natural Resources and Environment, often chairing or holding influential positions.
