The species was originally described by Karl Moritz Schumann and later transferred to the genus Brachystelma by N.E. Brown.
Description
Brachystelma schultzei is a herbaceous, perennial plant characterized by:
- Small, often succulent stems that may be subterranean or basally rosetted.
- Leaves that are opposite, fleshy, and generally ovate to lanceolate.
- Inflorescences bearing solitary or few flowers on short peduncles.
- Flowers typical of the genus: tubular corollas with a pronounced gynostegium, often pink to purplish in colour, and a prominent corona.
- Fruit a dehiscent follicle containing numerous seeds equipped with a silky coma for wind dispersal.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is native to southern Africa, with confirmed occurrences in:
- Namibia, particularly the arid to semi‑arid regions of the Namib Desert and adjacent savanna.
- Southwestern Angola, where it grows on sandy soils and rocky outcrops.
It prefers well‑drained, sandy or gravelly substrates and is typically found in open, sun‑exposed habitats, often in association with other xerophytic flora.
Ecology
Like other members of the subfamily Asclepiadoideae, B. schultzei is pollinated by insects that are attracted to its nectar-rich flowers. The plant's seeds are adapted for wind dispersal, allowing colonisation of disturbed or bare ground.
Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Brachystelma schultzei as a separate species. However, its limited and fragmented range, combined with habitat disturbance from mining and overgrazing in parts of Namibia and Angola, may pose localized threats. No specific conservation measures are documented, and the species is not known to be cultivated widely in botanical collections.
