Definition
The brachial veins are a pair (or occasionally a single) of deep veins that run alongside the brachial artery in the upper arm, conveying deoxygenated blood from the distal arm toward the axillary vein.
Overview
Located within the muscular compartment of the arm, the brachial veins constitute a principal component of the deep venous system of the upper limb. They receive blood from tributaries that drain the forearm and the arm’s deep structures, and they typically unite to form the axillary vein at the inferior border of the teres major muscle. The veins lie deep to the brachial artery, enclosed within the same neurovascular sheath, and are accompanied by the median nerve in the medial aspect of the arm.
Etymology / Origin
The term derives from the Greek word brachion (βραχίων) meaning “arm,” combined with the Latin vena meaning “vein.” Thus, “brachial veins” literally denotes “veins of the arm.”
Characteristics
- Number and Arrangement: Most commonly two venae brachiales (a medial and a lateral vein) accompany the brachial artery; a single median brachial vein may be present as a variation.
- Relation to Artery: The veins are situated within the same fascial sheath as the brachial artery, mirroring its course from the inferior border of the teres major to the cubital fossa.
- Tributaries: Major tributaries include the deep brachial (profunda brachii) vein, the radial and ulnar veins (which ascend from the forearm), and various muscular veins draining the biceps brachii and triceps brachii.
- Termination: The brachial veins converge to form the axillary vein, which continues as the subclavian vein.
- Valves: Like most deep veins, the brachial veins contain numerous bicuspid valves that promote unidirectional flow toward the heart and prevent retrograde movement.
- Clinical Significance: They are important in the assessment of upper‑limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and serve as access routes for central venous catheterization and arterial sampling when the brachial artery is accessed.
