Boyacá, Boyacá is a municipality and town located in the Márquez Province of the Boyacá Department in Colombia. It lies approximately 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) east of the departmental capital, Tunja. The municipality covers an area of about 48 km² (19 sq mi) and sits at an elevation of 2,420 m (7,940 ft) above sea level.
Etymology
The name “Boyacá” derives from the Chibcha language of the indigenous Muisca people and is interpreted as “region of the blankets” or “enclosure of the cacique” (chief).
History
Prior to the Spanish conquest, the area that is now Boyacá, Boyacá was part of the Muisca Confederation and was governed by the zaque of Hunza (present‑day Tunja). The town was founded on 8 August 1537 by Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada during his expedition in search of the legendary El Dorado.
Geography and Borders
Boyacá is bounded by Tunja and Soracá to the north, Jenesano to the south, Nuevo Colón and Ramiriquí to the west, and Ventaquemada to the east. The municipality is situated within the Andean highlands of central Colombia.
Demographics
According to the 2015 census, the municipality had a total population of 4,472 inhabitants, of which 403 lived in the urban centre. This yields a population density of roughly 93 inhabitants per km² (240 inhabitants per sq mi).
Government
